Scholarship winner of 2002, 14-year old Yolanda Araceli Cupíl Chojolón lives in Llanos del Pinal, Quetzaltenango and is attending eighth grade. During her free time, she participates in health and community development activities of one of our partner organizations, the Instituto de Desarrollo y Educación Integral (IDEI). She is an indigenous Quiché Mayan leader and has represented her community in national conferences on the rights of children. In the picture she is at her home with her mother to the right and younger sister in the middle. |

Global Challenges Scholarship ProgramScholarship winner of 2003, 17-year old Telma Alonzo stands on the right side, with Gloria García on the left. Telma is an indigenous Mam Mayan – a regional leader for the rights of children who has represented her community in national conferences on human rights. She wants to become a doctor so she can serve her community. In 2002, Telma went to the U.N. in New York City to represent Guatemalan children and help present specific demands for the respect of rights for children.
At this moment we do not have photos of our newest scholarship winner, Seydi Cecilia Bernardez from Honduras. Check back later this year for her photo and more information about her studies and work in support of Honduran garifuna communities.
